Phychogeriatric Seminar for Healthcare professionals

A Seminar on Awareness in Psychogeriatric Care takes place every year between September and June within the scope of actions and services at the Day Centres for Dementia. A seminar takes place every second Saturday and it involves 45 hours of theory and 18 hours of practice and case presentation. The coursework of the seminar is intended to promote information in matters of mental health of seniors, the development or enhancement of services for the mental health of seniors as well as to encourage training on Psychogeriatric Care.

Knowing that the population is ageing on a global scale, senior illnesses - such as dementia - are already epidemic and healthcare providers are called upon more frequently to recognise, diagnose or treat ailments in seniors such as dementia, schizophrenia, depression or suicidal behaviours. Therefore, knowledge on the particular characteristics of these mental disorders pertaining to their clinical state, the risks, their course and their prognosis is essential.

Despite the monumental increase of seniors and the consequential increase of neuropsychiatric ailments of seniors that demand expert knowledge and skills and the partnership of different specialists, it seems that in our country, actions on training and research in the field of Psychogeriatric care are significantly lacking.

The Psychogeriatric Awareness Seminar at the Day Centre for Dementia is the only seminar on the relevant coursework successfully taking place in Greece since 2011: It is directed at doctors and healthcare professionals with the purpose of a complete training on forms of dementia and other psychogeriatric issues. The training is performed by healthcare professionals with substantial expertise and many years of experience on the issues of the mental health of seniors, while the coursework covers the total of this age group’s psychopathology.

Specifically, the Coursework includes:

Introduction to Psychogeriatric/Ageing and changes in personality

Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia

Neuropsychological trials in dementia

Behavioural disorders within dementia

Dementia prevention

Pharmacological treatment of dementia

Non-pharmacological treatment of dementia

Depression in seniors

Treatment of Depression in seniors

Stress disorders in seniors

Psychosis in seniors

Care for chronic patients and the consequences

Legal matter for seniors

During the trainships, participants have the chance to implement all the theory during the 15 three-hour classes, completing a training cycle that affords them familiarity with evaluating a mental patient. Through co-evaluating the changes due to ageing, cognitive dysfunction, additional physical illnesses, the specificities in clinical examinations and through familiarity with the use of neuropsychological testing of cognitive functions, a holistic approach and treatment of the mental patient is viable as well as the appropriate choice of intervening treatment.
