Volunteering

In the pursuit to bring awareness to active ageing, the "Nestor" Psychogeriatric Association is implementing programs that provide motivation to the elderly to remain active and contribute to themselves and to the wider community.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Active Ageing is "the process of optimising opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age."

More specifically, we would say that active ageing allows people to utilise their skills after retirement so that they may enjoy a life of prosperity while being active in society in a way that satisfies their needs and wants.

One of the main pillars of active ageing is Volunteering. The "Nestor" Psychogeriatric Association has implemented volunteer programs in every structure it operates.

The benefits to the volunteer and to the community are multiple.

Through volunteering and giving, humanity is validated by showcasing ultimate respect towards the value of human life. Vulnerable groups of the population are protected and life and dignity are secured. The volunteer will experience emotional fulfilment, gratification and mental stability.

Our programs and our volunteers

In February 2016, “Nestor” Psychogeriatric Association commenced the Program “Complete and Specialised at-home Care for Dementia” 160 Plus, with one of the main goals being to promote volunteering for the elderly.

Additionally, within the framework Social Support Program of the Elderly Program, we developed a network of over 50 volunteers who visited the homes of the families that had become part of the Program, providing emotional support to the elderly and their families and offering tangible solutions and advice for the difficulties they faced every day.

Volunteering at “Nestor” Psychogeriatric Association is based on the modern understanding that the institution demands, as well as the philosophy that characterises it, so that the volunteer can be a valuable partner to our healthcare professionals.

In collaboration with the Heath Allies, informational actions were implemented on the value and benefits that occur through volunteering at the Open Centres of Protection of the Elderly (ΚΑΠΗ) and at the Friendship Clubs of the Municipality of Athens, aiming to activate the elderly in volunteer programs.

Note:

The “HEALTH ALLIES” is a volunteer program offering medical, dental, pharmacological and psychosocial care directed at vulnerable population groups in Attica, such as poverty-stricken, uninsured, single-parent families, and more, that was an initiative by the Medical University of Athens in collaboration with the Dental, Pharmacological, Nursing, Philosophy, Education and Psychology Departments.

Healthcare Professionals Volunteers

Beyond the Programs that involve the participation of elderly volunteers, the volunteering of healthcare professionals is also utilised by the Association. Their valuable contribution at our Day Centres offers them career opportunities in their expert fields, it assists them in creatively employ their free time, to gain new experiences, knowledge and skills, providing help to the elderly and their families that are in need.
