Sheltered Apartment

The Sheltered Apartment reactive structure in the context of a wider psychiatric rehabilitation program and it is the most important stage of the social reintegration of treated patients who have increased but not complete capabilities of self care and autonomy.

The Association’s Sheltered Apartment was developed in November 2012 and became operational on the 26th of March 2013, within the framework of the reinforcement of the national reform through the integrated project, titled “Development of 192 additional placements to new Sheltered Apartments in the regions of progressional exits” EP Human resources development 2007-2013.

It is located in the municipality of Athens, in the area of Gkizi, close to the association’s 1st Boarding Home, which operates as a satellite in activating our residents and involving them in activities, while it is offered for treating emergency cases in the event of health issues that require short term 24 hour care.

It is designed for people over 60 years old, with high or medium levels of functionality who require partial support, in continuation to the rehabilitation process that has mandatorily began in prior structures (boarding houses-shelters), while it is often the answer to the need of housing when social issues and financial reasons in the absence of a supportive environment, do not allow it.

There is also supervision by a cardiologist and pneumonologist from our association.
Due to the psychiatric needs of the residents, shifts are conducted at the Sheltered Apartment by two of the healthcare professionals, the Nurse and the General Duties Supervisor, on a five-day basis.

  • Training on co-habilitation skills through regulations and cultivating a team spirit
  • Immediate support for the smooth adjustment into the community
  • Education on usage of social services and tools (transportation services, shopping)
  • Training on management skills of personal and financial means
  • Reinforcement of free time organisation
  • Reinforcement of participation in entertainment activities (excursions, theatre, festivities)
  • Psychoeducation on the enhancement of sensibility, self-awareness and perception
  • Support in understanding the significance of choices, obligations and freedoms

  • Individualised psychiatric and nursing supervision
  • Psychological support to the residents and their families

  • Logistics regarding government support and subsidies
  • The advancement of autonomy and self-care
  • Skill improvement and maintenance on an individual and a social level

  • Decrease of the frequency and duration of institutionalisation
  • Provision of care in a therapeutic environment that detracts social marginalisation and benefits social integration while fighting stigma

Our beneficiaries, four residents, two men and two women, have conquered, through coaching and training, the necessary autonomy in aspects regarding their day-to-day life, within the apartment where they have formed family circumstances with strong bonds among them, themselves providing lessons in acceptance, support, understanding and what it means to be human. As such, they have achieved the same outside the sheltered apartment, reinforcing through their poise the fight against stigma.
